Rainy Days

Lately, the sky over Mexico City has been cloudy. I’m writing this from inside my apartment, which is entirely white, and when I look out the window, it feels as if the same scene continues beyond—white on white.

When the weather is like this, everything becomes quieter. The neighbors don’t make noise, and the usual hustle and bustle of the streets fades. People go out less, and you naturally turn inward. I like white. I like silence and the slowness they both carry.

The café downstairs gets busy during this season. I don’t drink coffee, but I love the smell—it reminds me of the reading room in Coyoacán I used to visit as a child when I was just learning how to read. That scent always takes me back to a peaceful place in my childhood.

A few years ago, I preferred sunny days, but I’ve learned to love the rainy ones too. Lately, I’ve even noticed that I walk much more slowly through the streets. Even if I’m cold or running late, something in the air pulls me away from worry and helps me savor each step.
